Research in Motion is finally unveiled its first tablet, dubbed the “PlayBook.” The BlackBerry PlayBook is only 0.4 inches (9.7 mm) of thick, making it a bit thinner compared to Apple iPad’s 0.5 inches. It also lightweight at just 0.9 lbs.
The BlackBerry PlayBook has high-end specs, include, a 1-GHz dual-core processor, a 7-inch multi-touch display with resolution of 1024×600, 1 GB of RAM, Adobe Flash 10.1, 802.11n Wi-Fi, two cameras (a 5MP camera at the back, a 3MP front-facing camera) and a micro-USB connector. There is no 3G connectivity, but the upcoming versions will ship with built-in 3G and 4G.
The PlayBook will be running a new QNX-based operating system with full multitasking capabilities and symmetric multi-core processing, QNX is an OS from a company that RIM bought in 2009. The device also features a new user-interface that seems much more suitable to a tablet. It’s designed to deliver a full web experience with both a WebKit browser as well as Adobe Flash 10.1 and AIR support.
On the software side, RIM is offering flexible application platform which supports WebKit/HTML-5, Flash 10.1, Adobe Mobile AIR, Adobe Reader, POSIX, OpenGL, Java, and a ton of developer-related SDKs and tools
RIM did not reveal pricing details or exact release date for the PlayBook. However the device is expected to hit U.S retail stores early next year, while international availability will be in the Q2 of 2011.
Here’s a video that will show you what the RIM Playbook looks like.
