ASUS CEO Jerry Shen on Friday has confirmed that his company was creating an Android version of the Eee Pad. The upcoming slate scheduled to be hitting market in March 2011 and should cost under $399.
The Android-powered tablet will be the third in the ASUS’s new line-up; first would be the ASUS Eee Pad EP121, which is announced back at Computex and priced around $1,000, when it ships in either December 2010 or January 2011.
That might be a bit higher compared to the Apple iPad, however ASUS’s machine will boast full PC functionality as it’s powered by an Intel Core 2 Duo ULV processor and running Windows 7 Home Premium. It also includes a keyboard docking station for better text-input, and features a 12-inch screen display.
Oddly, while the EP101TC discarded Windows 7 Embedded Compact in favor of the Google Android OS, according to Jerry Shen there would be a third model in January 2011 which would in fact run the Microsoft OS. That will feature a 10″ touchscreen display, ARM processors and has a price tag between $399 up to $499, without the EP121′s docking station. That is a bit more expensive compared to the Android model.
And the last, the ASUS Eee Tablet – a monochrome LCD device designed for reading and annotating documents – will ship globally in October and will be priced at about $300, significantly cheaper than the $500 tipped recently. It will feature a homegrown Linux OS instead of Android, Offers WiFi, 2MP camera, touchscreen, audio recording, along with a browser, microSD card and a battery good for 10hrs life time. ASUS are considering to change its name to the Eee Note, so as to prevent direct tablet comparisons.
